Non-verbal Reading Activity

By Marilee Senior | DOWN SYNDROME & SPECIAL NEEDS

If your student has been explicitly taught the consonant sounds and the "Vowel Buddy" phonograms ai, ay, ee, oa, then try this interactive activity for your non-verbal learner.

  1. Grab a plastic pail or bucket.
  2. Cut out the pictures individually. You can also cut the sentences if you choose. .
  3. Teach to Success: review the phonograms that are used in these sentences. You want your learner to experience success.
  4. Start with I do, we do, you do first, so your child knows what is expected. You know the child is reading the sentence if he puts the correct pictures in the pail.
  5. Start small, then expand on this concept.

You can also add this Out-n-About activity below.

Give your child a note when you are in the store with $2.00 in it. The note reads:  Pay for a PAYDAY.
